This was certainly an interesting read. I've only encountered a few ESL students and just recently the concept has really crept into my ideas about teaching.
There's just something about the look on a student's face when they don't understand what you're saying, not the concept, but the actual words. As someone who's tried with little success to learn another language, I can hardly imagine how difficult it would be to be immersed in a foreign language. Speaking a language is a challenge in itself; add to that the task of learning new concepts, ideas, and skills in this language and one is under a lot of pressure.
I guess what I'm driving at is that this article really made me think about how much extra attention would be needed to help ESL students keep a good pace in their learning. The article did discuss a lot of tools, but to be honest, I think I'd have a hard time what to use and when. There's just so much to cover that I often struggle while thinking about how to accommodate first language English speakers let alone those who are still learning the language!
So what do you use to start off? How long til you change strategies? How do I relate to ESL students on a level that truly aids their learning? It is clear that this is a challenging topic.
